topher's excellent friend and adventure partner, Gordon "Smitty" Smith, has been selected for promotion to Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy—a significant achievement reflecting his dedication to our country and to his junior troops.
Gordon was one of my early Navy mentors. We went through all of our initial training together, but Gordon had served several years in the United States Marine Corps before becoming a Sailor. So he had tons of knowledge to share; he shared it freely; and he pushed us to give our best. Gordon continues to give his best every day and cares deeply for the troops he leads. And our nation is the better for his service. Congratulations on those anchors, Gordon. You've earned them. Thank you for continuing to serve.
Now Smitty, plan some time to go on an adventure and contemplate the oddities of life with me.
