The acid test—June, 2007

I've come up with the relationship acid test for what I'm calling FOCS—Fear of Commitment Syndrome. The test is easy to take yourself or to administer for someone else. First answer the questions, then score yourself using the guide down below.

Please answer the following two True/False questions honestly:

1) I, [Your name here], have a tendency to fear things with uncertain outcomes.

True / False

2) I, [Your name here], believe that long-term relationships and marriages have uncertain outcomes.

True / False

How to score this test for yourself or someone else:

Q1: True
Q1: False
Q2: True
FOCS +
FOCS -
Q2: False
FOCS -
FOCS -

Answering false to either question on this test indicates a negative test for FOCS. The simple logic is that a person must both believe that relationships have uncertain outcomes and that uncertain outcomes are to be avoided in order to test positive for FOCS.

Of course, only a complete nincompoop could answer anything other than "True" to number 2. So the real power of this test is in question 1. If you answered "True" to question 1, there is a profoundly high probability that you have issues committing to long-term relationships, or dedicating yourself to long term relationships.

It is important to take this test on an occasional basis, as people can change their attitudes toward activities with uncertain outcomes or can find uncertain situations that are significantly wonderful to warrant the risk, and can therefore outgrow their FOCS.

I've created a printable version of this test so that you may print it and share it as needed. It is formatted to be folded so that the purpose and scoring guide for the test are below the fold.
